VenueSpotter finds pubs, restaurants, cafés, takeaways and food shops that are about to open or have just opened, and sends them each week to the businesses that supply them.
Where the venues come from
Council licence applications
A venue that wants to sell alcohol or serve hot food late at night must apply to its council, and the council publishes the application for 28 days before deciding. That is often weeks before the doors open, and it tells you whether the venue applied to sell alcohol. So far we read these in England and Wales only, from the small number of councils that publish them in a form we can read.
The Food Standards Agency food register
Every food business must register with its council before it opens. We read the register for every council in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each day and pick out the businesses that are new and still waiting for their first food hygiene inspection. In Scotland this is the Food Hygiene Information Scheme, run by Food Standards Scotland.

What you get
A weekly email and spreadsheet for your area. For each venue:
- Venue name
- Type: restaurant or café, pub or bar, takeaway, shop, mobile caterer
- Address, town and postcode
- Whether it applied to sell alcohol, where the licence application says
- Where we found it, with a link to the public source
- The date we found it
A venue that shows up in both sources appears once.

“Name withheld” means the business is registered under a person's own name. We never show or keep individuals' names.
